I don't know where to put it, this is another by-product of a sleepless night (but last night I slept well!) and everybody who is a real fan of rock music will probably just use the facepalm on me for this. I tried to come up with a list of my favourite rock songs, to make amends to the rock music community in Smacking Bottom. :-)
1. We are the Champions (Queen) We keep singing this song every week. And once baby has turned eighteen we will give her a tape with us parents singing it for her. Among all her friends. Maybe this is too embarrassing at that age. We'll better wait till her wedding, before we do that. :-)
2. Nothing else matters (Metallica) The perfect kitchen song.
3. You'll never walk alone (Liverpool fans) Odd, I know. I have only watched Liverpool play once (and they lost), but when all fans sing it, this song is marvelous. So, the atmosphere this creates is the actual reason why I enjoy this one and I do not even know if this song qualifies at all. But some of the Liverpool fans look very much like heavy metal fans. :-)
Besides, I am not a soccer fan at all, but teasing hubby by supporting Liverpool is great fun for me. He supports any London Club, if Arsenal does not play, but he never supports those who sing best. :-(
4. Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) I love the slow build-up. Reminds me of sex.
5. Belfast Child (Simple Minds) I do not know if they qualify as a rock band, but I thought they are not really doing pop music either.
6. Easy (Faith no more) Actually too good to be number six. But since I do have trouble to fill the list up to ten, being on my list means this song has to be special.
7. Paint it black (Rolling Stones) Apart from Satisfaction, this is the only song of them that I like listening to. But Mick Jagger has a fascinating mouth, so, without sound, I could watch him for hours. And this was no cheap joke, I have done exactly that in the past. With a bag of popcorn in my hand. It beats some films I know :-)
8. Smells like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) I like this one, but can't listen to it as often as to other songs.
9. Like a Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) Neat, though I do actually like some cover versions better, because they are easier to understand. He always leaves the impression of having drunk too much.
10. Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) Are they rock? No idea, and surely not the leather and chains type, but I like some of their songs.
There might be more, but I can't think of any specific titles and won't ask hubby, because then he'd probably suggest that I expand the list by 200.
Great selection. You'll Never Walk Alone is an anthem in these parts :)
ReplyDeleteEleanor Rigby is my favourite Beatles song
I have a recording of Paint it Black by the London Symphony Orchestra - classical rock is brilliant.

DF, thank you, I am glad that you like it. I can easily imagine that You'll Never Walk Alone is a favourite for so many people, I thought this was so impressive when I heard it from all the fans, and I get goosebumps all over from it. Beatles are a must! I only know the Rolling Stones version of Paint it Black, but I'll try to find the London Symphony Orchestra version, I am sure it is fantastic, because I know some other classical rock pieces played by them and they are absolutely awesome.

I don't listen to too much rock, but Queen and Led Zeppelin would totally make my list too. I'm more of a pop fan. My husband makes fun of me and calls it "teeny bopper" music, but I don't care, I like shallow music :-)
ReplyDeleteHi River, I also prefer pop, and I also get laughed at for my music taste very often. I like Ellie Golding, Lily Allen, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Adele, etc, everything of that style and hubby also says it is shallow music. I love it, though, because a lot of it is feel-good music :)

ReplyDeleteHi Roz, that's probably true, but since I made some comments about rock music, I somehow found it only fair to mention this in a more positive form. Yeah, Nirvana too, ... but definitely more Ellie Golding :-)

PS: I thought it would be nicer to sign with my own name, not with Roz'!
